Meals on Wheels SA Case Study

Exciting expansion for an integral organisation

Construction of the brand-new Meals on Wheels SA premises has seen a number of innovative products and materials brought together in the design from JPE Design Studio, constructed by Kennett supported by Commercial Fitouts Australia (CFA) and Packers. The new state-of-the-art facility has been created to become a new head office and commercial kitchen of the organisation.

The $22 million purpose-built Cook Chill facility and corporate headquarters is the biggest investment in the organisation’s history. More than 2,000 chilled and frozen meals will be cooked every day to support even more South Australians.

Products supplied for this project:

Lining the ceiling and creating a feature to the office entrance is Knauf Stratopanel perforated plasterboard. With its sound absorbing and air cleaning properties, this product is a popular option for achieving functionality with style in an open space. This acoustic lining, also used throughout the open plan office space, has been paired with other features such as timber battens and recesses while discrete details such as matching Stratopanel access hatches have been installed to achieve a seamless finish.

Throughout the two-storey construction, warm open spaces and an inclusive flow between areas was an important design consideration to reflect the organisation’s core values and identity within the community. Where adjacent personal offices were required, the option for doorways to be seamlessly open or closed was made possible with the install of Metinno Flushline Cavity Sliding Door Systems. The floor-to-ceiling design conceals Metinno Aluminium Sliding Doors fabricated by ADX Depot enabling an interruption-free, open or closed entrance.

Craig Butcher, ADX Depot project manager, explains the versatility of the Metinno Cavity Units when facing challenges… “The project required wider doors, which were beyond the specs of the requested aluminium framed cavity unit. We were able to show that the combination of Metinno Flushline Cavity Sliding Doors, with aluminium framed glass doors, provided a very aesthetically pleasing option while still retaining the large width of the doors.”

Ian Standen, from Packers, comments on ADX Depot supplying Metinno Cavity Units for this job, “(ADX Depot) meets specification requirements for the builder with a nice-looking product, easy to follow order forms and good turnaround time.” We asked Ian how his experience and service working with ADX Depot was, “Great customer service from order to delivery, friendly staff willing to help over the phone or on site with samples and follow ups.”

Moving into the commercial kitchen area, Versilux Fibre Cement Lining by James Hardie has been utilised in the kitchen and cool rooms for its durability and resistance to damage from rot and fire.

The exciting expansion of Meals on Wheels SA has enabled this integral organisation to contribute even more to the South Australian community. To read more on this project visit the project features from the builder, Kennett Builders, and Architect, JPE Design Studio.
