Winner of the HIA South Australia Custom Built Home Award 2022

Hazelwood Park Case Study

Working solely with premium products and incredible teams, we’re proud of every project we’re involved in — but some truly stand out.

When a residential home in Hazelwood Park was named winner of the HIA South Australia Custom Built Home Award 2022, we were thrilled for everyone involved! It was an outstanding collaboration with Anthony Donato Architects, Vin Melisi & Son (builder) and ADX Depot to produce this new architectural contemporary, stylish and well-detailed home. Here’s how it happened…

“We were honoured to receive the award, and we couldn’t be happier with the end result,” says Architect Anthony Donato and the very lucky home owner, too. “It’s a beautiful home, and the detail and features work incredibly well — I’m really enjoying it!”

The brief of stylish detailing in an environmentally friendly home, with north facing living areas on a relatively steep site came with its challenges.

“We really wanted the house to blend in with the land, so we created split levels to work with the gradients and made use of the rear access via a back lane. We also worked with the narrow frontage by expanding the frontage to both sides to really open up the feel of the home,” Anthony explains.

The challenges and specific detailing required the right products and advice from ADX Architectural Product Manager Craig Butcher, who supplied the project with the information needed on shadow line skirting, architraves and cavity doors.

“Craig was very helpful! He met us on site several times to go through the details with the builder, which made things run smoothly. The products were exciting, and the large floor to ceiling sliding door that divides the house and doubles as a feature was a fantastic option,” Anthony says.

Builder Pat Melisi echoes Anthony’s sentiments, saying: “The sloping land on this project, working with different levels, different ceiling heights and retaining walls all made for a challenging build, but we had the right team to make it happen. It required various materials, including stone, aluminium cladding, timber and special linear bricks from Spain — and it all had to work together,” he says.

“It was really good to work with Craig from ADX, who took additional stress out of the project by being really helpful and available. Our trades found that products supplied by ADX were all simple to install, and when we had questions about various products we hadn’t used before, Craig was great at running through installation guides,” Pat says.

The pre-made aluminium shadowline skirting saved the complication of a layered installation, and ADX was also able to supply multiple cavity sliding units that were made-to-order, including one that extended to the full ceiling height.

In addition, Craig worked with Pat to provide advice on the best ways to finish the tiles at Ezyjambs, options to make jambs match the skirting, solutions for finishing the intersections of the skirts and jambs and finishing the wall where the sliding door was installed.

The result was a jaw-dropping, functional home that will be loved for many years by its owners. ADX Depot was proud to partner with both Donato Architects and Vin Melisi & Son on this project, and the official recognition of the HIA award is just the icing on the cake!
