Is workplace design set to change post COVID19?

For many years open-plan workplace design has led the way, improving team communication, collaboration and the opportunity to build culture. Large, open spaces with communal stations and break-out zones have long-allowed for creativity in layout and design to stimulate workers and encourage productivity.

But is open-plan always the best way to go?

Some key disadvantages of open-plan design include:

Increase in noise

Open plan offices can become noisier and more chaotic. Multiple employees in the one space all trying to have conversations on the phone or otherwise can increase difficulty hearing.

Increase in distraction

For some employees, people passing to and fro can create interruption and at times create difficulty focussing on tasks.

Spread of sickness and infection

Working within close proximity of other employees can increase the chances of passing on germs and colds. During flu season, this can impact attendance and productivity.

How can we overcome these disadvantages in workplace design?

Include partitioning

Whether it’s aluminium with glass windows or solid internal walls, creating defined spaces that can be closed off can facilitate concentration by shielding distraction.

The range of Metinno Aluminium Partitioning & Door systems, available through ADX Depot, allow endless variations to design while achieving the desired style and finish. The slimline sections house floor-to-ceiling glass panelling maintaining the open-plan feel while also offering the option for privacy.

For larger spaces, interlocking sliding door systems and a trending solution allowing the ability to integrate two spaces. Doors can be fully opened or closed depending on how the space is being utilised.

Design & build with sound absorbing materials

Products such as Siniat Stratopanel & Designpanel perforated plasterboard, acoustic rated ceiling tiles or sound absorbing rafts such as AMF Topiq Rafts plus Austratus timber feature ceiling and wall systems can all be considered for spaces where open-plan design is desired and acoustics need to be absorbed.

Perhaps you’re still working from home or considering a transition to a more permanent home office. If that’s the case, there are still ways to open up or close off your workspace depending on the desired use. One example is through incorporating Metinno cavity sliding door systems. Not only do cavity sliding doors save space, their ability to fully disappear into the wall creates a seamless finish when open.

ADX Depot has years of industry experience and product knowledge backed by committed suppliers. We will work with you and your team to select materials and achieve the required ratings while maintaining style.
